Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum and
NS Juanita shop tour - 6:30 am to 5:00 pm

This time we will visit two great railroad sites in Altoona PA. These will be the Railroaders Memorial Museum and the NS Juanita shop.

The tour will take 1 ½ hours with no place to sit and climbing may be involved. Hard hats, safety glasses and ear protection will be provided. Long pants and no open toe shoes will be required, NO SNEAKERS, Tank Tops or open top shoes!!! We had a few people at past conventions that showed up in shorts and had to sit out the tour on the bus.

If you missed the Norfolk Southern Roanoke tour this is your second chance. We have been invited to tour this facility in the heart of Altoona. At the Juniata locomotive shop, Norfolk Southern regularly recycles locomotives into more efficient machines, benefiting both customers and the environment. NS can strip a locomotive down to the bare frame and completely rebuild it, including the engine, alternator, wiring, cab, trucks, combos and running gear.

Today we have the opportunity to visit the Railroaders memorial in Altoona PA. From the first time I tour this museum to the last time I found it the most informative railroad museum I have been too.

The Railroaders Memorial Museum is dedicated to revealing, interpreting, commemorating and celebrating the significant contributions of Railroaders and their families to American life and industry.

By the 1920s, the Altoona railroad works employed 15,000 workers, and by 1945 the Pennsylvania Railroad's facilities at Altoona had become the world's largest rail shop complex.

We will have a box lunch at the Museum.

Museum Tour – 8:00, 8:30, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

The Today we will be visiting two museums and have lunch in a Bavarian beer hall.

The Western Pennsylvania Model Railroad Museum (WPMRM) was founded in November of 1938, making it one of the oldest model railroad organizations in the nation. They have 6,500+ feet of track (we're not even sure of the exact amount). This includes the four main lines, sidings, yards and hidden track. Most of the track is code 83, but some is code 100.

Lunch will be at the Hofbräuhaus of Pittsburgh. This is the first authentic Hofbräuhaus in America, modeled

after the legendary 400+ year-old Hofbräuhaus in Munich, Germany! Guests are now able to enjoy many of the traditions from Germany that have made Hofbräuhaus famous. From the traditionally decorated rooms in the building to the beer that is brewed on-site, and of course the excellent German fare, Hofbräuhaus Pittsburgh is a memorable experience for all.

Another stop on our local tour will be the Carnegie Science Center. This interactive museum has four floors of interesting activities.
