Extra Fare Programs and Activities
We developed a full program of Extra Fare activities and excursions for the 2009 Convention, and details are included below.
Although the 2009 Convention is now over, we are keeping these pages online for a while as reference.
The pictures and descriptions below detail the Extra Fare programs that were available.

Evening Train ride and barbeque dinner

Mt. Hood Railroad Excursion

This tour took a trip up the scenic Columbia River Gorge to Hood River for an evening ride on the Mt. Hood Railroad.
The Mt. Hood Railroad runs south from Hood River up the north slope of Mt. Hood along Hwy. 35 to scenic Parkdale,
a rural community nestled among the fruit orchards that spread across the northern face of Mt. Hood .
Dinner was served during the layover at Parkdale as a "western style meal". |

Famous and new N Layouts
Wednesday morning and afternoon
and
Saturday morning

This tour included three premier N-scale layouts in the Portland area,
two of which have been featured in national model railroading magazines.
Each tour included a 45-minute stop at each layout on a round-robin basis.
Three separate groups of an approximate size of 25 persons per group was rotating among the three layouts.
The tour was run in both a morning and an afternoon session on Wednesday, and repeated on Saturday morning,
to give maximum opportunity for as many as possible to visit these top-quality layouts. |

Prototype Railroad and Historic Roundhouse Tours
Thursday Morning 8:00 am to 12:30 pm, Afternoon 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm

This package included both a tour of the Oregon Pacific short line railroad shops and yard, and a visit to the
Union Pacific’s (formerly Southern Pacific) Brooklyn Roundhouse
(home to two classic Northern class steam locomotives – the SP&S 700 and the SP 4449).
Each site was visited in groups of approximately 50 persons and took about 60 minutes to complete.
The tour was run in both a morning and afternoon session. |

Columbia Gorge/Timberline Lodge Scenic Tour
Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The spectacular Columbia River Gorge and majestic Mt. Hood all on one tour.
This tour ran east up the gorge on the Oregon side of the great Columbia River,
railfanning the Union Pacific mainline along the way before stopping at Multnomah Falls.
The tour continued to Hood River, then turned south to head up the north slope of Mt. Hood to historic Timberline Lodge.
After the flavors of the northwest during lunch at the lodge, the tour returned to Portland via Hwy. 26. |
Evergreen Aviation Museum visit

Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum

Visit to the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon,
home of the Spruce Goose. This museum also features an IMAX theater, a variety of airplane and helicopter exhibits,
a research library and an archive collection.
The aircraft, stories and artifacts are up-close and personal examples of human achievements that have brought us to this current place in history.

Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad

Oregon Coast Railroad Excursion

Step back in time and experience a bit of yesteryear.
Enjoy the beautiful Oregon Coast by riding the rail behind a 1910 Heisler Steam Locomotive.
This scenic trip chugs along Tillamook Bay and gives passengers views of the ocean and the Oregon Coast Range mountains.
Great for all ages, this trip will give you a glimpse into history.
Enjoy a box lunch from the Blue Heron Cheese Factory while onboard.
And, when you’re done on the coast, you’ll stop for a visit at the world famous Tillamook Cheese Factory
where you can see their cheese makers and packaging staff at work.

Micro-Brewery Tour
Wednesday afternoon ~12:00 noon to 3:30 p.m.

| Portland Micro Brews
Portland is the new microbrewery capital of the world!
During this tour, you will learn about the micro-brewing process,
enjoy hearty microbrew samples from among hundreds of locally-produced varieties,
make new friends, and have some fun!
Relax and enjoy the local brews while designated tour drivers guide you through Portland’s micro-brewery maze!
Food is included as part of the package.

Zoo Train Excursion
Friday Evening 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Oregon Zoo and Railroad
An afternoon/evening at the Oregon Zoo, included rides on the Oregon Zoo Railway,
along with some special tours of the Zoo Railway’s backshops.
During a four mile rail trip through beautiful Washington Park, the trip the train stops at
Portland's famous Rose Garden (Portland is the "City of Roses")
and travel through the famous Oregon Zoo behind a 50 year old 30" gauge steam locomotive.
